B-29 Superfortress S/N 45-21748

Many B-29s have been preserved, restored, and are on static display around the United States.

Although 3,970 B-29s were built during production, only about 22 complete B-29 airplanes have survived.

One of the survivors is B-29 Superfortress S/N 45-21748 located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History. (Despite some reports, this aircraft is NOT the "Duke of Albuquerque". The S/N of the the B-29 "Duke of Albuquerque" is 44-69829).

Restoration Project

This historic aircraft is currently on display in the Museum’s 9-acre outdoor exhibit area known as Heritage Park. Since the B-29 is displayed outside, it is subject to the ravages of the southwestern weather, and this iconic piece of history is now showing wear. The Museum initiated a program to restore this historic B-29. More information about the aircraft, the restoration project, and timeline.

Also, a Kickstarter program was initiated by the Museum to raise money to help fund the project. Click for more information on how you can help restore the B-29.

Since our last visit to the museum, the B-29 has been repainted as shown in the video below.
